The two Asura stared at the pile of junk that once was a golem. How the thing had even survived the two hundred-odd years since its creation was beyond them. Mox, the entity had called it. A creation of Oola, the Asuran woman who had invented and founded the golem project. They simply stood there and studied the heap of ancient technology for a few minutes. While the prospect of studying one of the first golems to be made was exciting, it simply was not the Asura way to be nostalgic. Still, Razah had begged, has said it would be worth their while to restore Mox to 'his' former glory. The fact that Razah had referred to the machine as a 'he' rattled them a bit; the Ritualist had to be crazy, to think a piece of hardware was a person. Jakk shrugged. "Well, we might as well get to it. Help me power it up." Veyr nodded and the two poked around the rubbish heap in an attempt to find its power source. They jumped away as the frayed wires poking out of what was left of its right arm started to spark. "You could have found a gentler way to wake me." Came the golem's voice. Jakk and Veyr gaped. It sounded so much like a person when it spoke, instead of flat-toned and automated like normal golems. "Well... that worked, at least." Veyr stated, raising an eyebrow. "So how do you suggest we go about fixing this bucket of bolts?" "Excuse me-" "I don't think it can be fixed." Jakk replied. "It's just too damaged. We may even need to repogram it..." "I'm right here, you know!" "So a complete redesign and overhaul, then?" "The best course of action, I believe. There's a dwarven forge here... Pity we have to resort to such primitive technology. We may need to reuse some of its broken parts-" "I am NOT an it!" Mox all but growled. "And I do not appreciate being ignored!" That got their attention. "You're just standing there talking about reprogramming me?! Are you usually this rude and inconsiderate? I am not 'just some golem', I have a soul too. I have my own opinions and desires too, so why not ask me what I would like?" Jakk and Veyr turned to look at each other, baffled. "This is nothing like what they taught us at the College..." Veyr griped. Jakk shrugged. "Okay... Mox... what would you like, then?" "To be less bulky, for starters. It's been over two hundred years, I think I'm seriously overdue for an update." "I'll say..." Veyr muttered. "And I want a face. With eyes and eyebrows. And my eyes better be green." Jakk stared incredulously. The golem was pouting. How was it even capable of that?! "Give me some time to come up with a design. I'll show you when it's done." Jakk agreed. His head hurt. Really, really hurt. Just what was Mox, anyway? It simply could not be a golem... Even for such primitive technology, its programming was far more advanced than anything the Asura could come up with these days. He'd have to figure out how to replicate that. The rest of the day was spent bent over a low table, debating over Mox's new design. Somehow it just didn't seem right to give him the straight-edged, angular build of modern golems. They studied his broken parts, getting ideas for his new design. Slowly it was drawn out and finished. Veyr took it over to Mox for his approval. The golem declared he liked it, and work to build his new chassis began. It took weeks, almost four months, to finish the project. It took another week to carefully take Mox apart and install his dual cores into the new body. They held their breath as they waited for Mox MK2 to power up. It took a few minutes, and then... Jewel green eyes flickered open, the shutters that covered them retracting to allow sight. Mox experimented with his new body. It was slim, almost human in its proportions, and he could actually turn his head. He flexed his fingers (four now, instead of the three he had before) and walked over to the scrap pile that used to be his body. He paused, his new eyebrows drawing together. It was... strange, seeing his old body like this. But he liked the feel of his new one. He could adjust. Now if he could just pester Razah to give him back his old scythe... | |||||
